Gallery label
VASE Britannia standard silver, gold Edinburgh 2001 Michael Lloyd This magnificent vase by Michael Lloyd has a surface chased with oak leaves and 24 carat gold inserts representing acorns. Naturalistic motifs are a recurring theme in Lloyd's work. The vase is made of Britannia standard silver (95.84% pure silver) which is of greater purity than sterling silver (92.5%). This higher purity makes Britannia silver softer than sterling silver and therefore particularly suitable for finely wrought chased work. Michael Lloyd trained at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1976. He is represented in important national and international collections of contemporary silver. One of his recent commissions was the ceremonial mace for the new Scottish Parliament in 1999. He is one of the major practitioners in Britain today. M.4-2002(26/11/2002)
