Object history
This was the oldest layer in a 'sandwich' of threee papers found in a cupboard/alcove in a first-floor room in the Mansion House, Whitchurch, Shropshire. It had been pasted directly onto the wooden planking wall. It appears to have been patched together from off-cuts and pieces left over from elsewhere in the house. Though it is not possible to see a full pattern repeat it would appear to be identical to the pattern of the blue flock recorded at Doddington Hall, Lincs, in the 1760s, and has the same basic pattern (without the gold embellishment) as the red flock supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Sir William Robinson for 26 Soho Square, London (a sample of which is in the V&A collection, E.596-1985)
