Object history | Historical significance: This is a set of bed linen made and used expressly for the 'laying out' or preparation of a dead body prior to burial. It consists of the standard two sheets, bolster and pillow case, but also includes the face and mirror clothes associated with rituals related to death. Unlike winding sheets and shrouds, the laying out linen was not buried with the body, but removed to be used again. |
