Historical context note

Painter in watercolour and oils, specialising in figures of Gypsy women and landscapes. Also etcher and illustrator. Apprenticed to firm of lithographers in native Edinburgh. Moved to London in 1900, working initially as medical illustrator. On staff of ILN, 1903-07, when also studied at Heatherley's Art School in evenings. Visited Italy 1912-13 and travelled widely in Europe, especially Spain. R.Lewis, Sir William Russell Flint 1880-1969, 1980.

When studying at Heatherley's drawing school, Flint practised painting in monochrome, to further his ambition to become a magazine illustrator. Monochrome drawings were the starting point of the cheaper and much more common form of half-tone illustrations at the beginning of the 20th century, as opposed to expensive and difficult full colour half-tone reproduction. See R.Lewis, Sir William Russell Flint 1880-1969, 1980. p.22
