Place of origin |
Durga killing the Buffalo demon Mahisha. The goddess stands with her left leg on the back of Mahisha and the right foot on the back of the lion. The four-armed Durga spears the emerging demon with her long trident held in her lower right hand and yanks his hair in the lower left hand, while she wields a sword in her upper right hand and a now-indeterminate weapon in the upper left. Both the arch and the low base are simply modelled, with damage to the front of the base on the right hand side. The figure is very worn, with suggestions that the eyes were once inlaid. That, with the general style suggest Gujarat but Madhya Pradesh is also possible as a plac of manufacture. Dark copper colour.
