Garuda

Figure
18th Century-19th Century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The figure of Garuda is shown with small wings projecting from the upper halves of his two arms, but his body is essentially human. He is shown with parrot-like beak, wearing earrings, a tall conical headdress and a long ankle-length dhoti festooned with strings of pearls. He holds his hands together in the anjali mudra. He stands on a plain oval base which probably slotted into a more substanital base. The size of the figure suggests that this figure was intended as a temple image.
