Inscribed under the sloping neckline "Mifs: Clara: Webster: / burnt on the Stage: of / Drury Lane: Dec 14th: / and died on the next: / day but one." Painted wax bas-relief on dark glass set into black box frame.
On reverse mounted on hessian: A print showing four men in 18th century dress beside a large stone with Latin inscription.

Object history
The portrait is a memorial to the English dancer Clara Webster, who died of burns resulting from her dress catching fire during a performance of "The Revolt of the Harem" at Drury Lane Theatre in 1844.
The portrait came to the Museum as part of the Cyril Beaumont Bequest.
