Costume design for the boy dancers in Act II scene 4. The design depicts two full length male figures wearing "eastern" style pantomime costumes. The costume for the figure on the left consists of a gold breastplate with epaulets, green sash and purple slashed sleeves; a pair of magenta coloured slashed baggy trousers; a leopard skin worn over the trousers and fastened with a wide purple and gold belt at the waist; a pair of purple and gold boots; and a purple & green turban topped with a magenta plume. The costume for the figure on the right consists of a purple crossed leather sash with studs and medallions worn over a bare torso; a baggy red loincloth decorated at the waist with purple studded streamers; gold arm bands decorated with long purple studded streamers; and a purple and red turban decorated with a blue plume.

| Object history | This costume design by Hugh Durrant is part of a group of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1994. The design was executed for a production of the pantomime "Dick Whittington" performed at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth on 19th December 1992. The show was directed by Roger Redfarn, and the lighting was designed by Jenny Cane. The cast included Les Dawson as Ada the Cook, and Michelle Dotrice as the Spirit of the Bells. Historical significance: An excellent example of late 20th century costume design for pantomime, which is currently poorly represented in the Theatre Museum Collection. |
