Costume design for Andrew Bell as the Vizier. The design depicts a full length male figure holding a decorative staff in his left hand, and wearing an "eastern" style pantomime costume. The costume consists of an elaborate red "caftan" style coat decorated with a large black & gold paisley pattern and yellow, orange, & black geometric circular patterns studded with single white pearls, worn over a very wide pair of baggy chalvar trousers decorated with diagonal purple, black & orange stripes. A large pale blue kusak or sash with gold fringing is tied around the vizier's chest. On the head the figure wears a tall hat decorated with a red & orange diamond pattern, a black band with orange crescents, a black plume, and long length of red fabric. The outfit is completed with a pair of purple and gold turkish slippers and a bejewelled armband worn over the right bicep.

| Object history | This costume design by Hugh Durrant is part of a group of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1994. The design was executed for a production of the pantomime "Dick Whittington" performed at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth on 19th December 1992. The show was directed by Roger Redfarn, and the lighting was designed by Jenny Cane. The cast included Les Dawson as Ada the Cook, and Michelle Dotrice as the Spirit of the Bells. Historical significance: An excellent example of late 20th century costume design for pantomime, which is currently poorly represented in the Theatre Museum Collection. |
