A standing female figure of Yashoda with the child Krishna astride her left hip, and her left arm holding him. The right hand holds a lotus bud with a long stem. Her hair is dressed into a neat bun (kesabandha), and she wears two layers of lower garments, the one underneath extending to her ankles. The upper garment is patterned with horizontal lines and circles, while the lower one has rows of double lines with vertical hatching marks in between. She stands on a flat-topped domed lotus pedestal on a plain square base. Yahoda, wife of a cowherd, Nanda, is the foster mother of Krishna, to whom his father, Vasudeva, brought his son to escape being killedby his uncle.

Object history | Transferred from the India Museum in London to the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) in 1879. It was numbered 398 in the India Museum Slips where it was registered as having been exhibited in the Paris Universal exhibition, 1855. It is registered as coming from Coimbatore, Madras, and was believed to represent Lakshmi inthe nineteenth century. |
