Tray

ca. 1870-1875 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A tray is a western rather than a Japanese form, and the scenes of nature here, together with the rim in the shape of bamboo, would have appealed to the western buyers. The skills used in making the tray were also admired in Europe. Christopher Dresser, from whose company this tray was acquired, wrote in his 1882 book Japan, its Architecture, Art and Art Manufactures, 'No people but the Japanese have understood the value of colour in metal compositions'.
