Print

mid sixteenth century, before 1570
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

No information survives about the identity of the monogrammist EVG, and this series of prints represents his only recognisable work. However, these designs exemplify the sort of architectural jewellery that was popular in the sixteenth century, particularly in northern Europe. Hans Collaert, who engraved and printed the collection, was himself the designer of many pendant designs with similarly architectural features throughout his career.

Object history
Pendants with architectural designs can be seen in various collections. WB149 in the British Museum, for example, though it is a German piece, shows a shared an interest with architectural elements exhibited in the Collaert designs. A print in the Rijksmuseum collection, RP-P-1898-A-20194, shows another print from the same series with a Classical deity placed in the architectural space. (F. Allitt)
