Object history | The gloves were worn by Alicia Markova as Alicia in the premiere of Ninette de Valois' ballet "The Haunted Ballroom" at Sadler's Wells Theatre on 3 April 1934 by the Vic-Wells (now Royal) Ballet. The gloves were worn in the first scene of the ballet, when Alicia and her companions Beatrice and Ursula (all the characters took their names from the dancers who created the roles) wear evening dress. The gloves came to the Museum as part of the Cyril Beaumont Bequest. Historical significance: Part of a costume worn by one of Englands greatest dancers for a significant work in the development of the Vic-Wells (now Royal) Ballet. |
