Place of origin |
The use of the acanthus leaf as a feature of ornament design dates back to ancient Rome and spans a variety of media. From Renaissance garments to Byzantine pillars, acanthus leaves are a sturdy leaf around which to base design. Charles de Moelder’s frieze designs, shown here, incorporate these large leaves as well as putti into a lush, classicised design. This design could have been used as an architectural element, or could have been incorporated into the design of furniture or a household vessel.
