| Gallery label | One of a range of designs for industrially-made ceramics and glass by contemporary painters and other artists, an experiment aimed at improving British industrial design conceived as a result of the Gorell report into the subject, 1933. All the glassware was made by Stuart & Sons. This pattern, 'Rain', was the only one taken into the company's pattern books, excepting those by the company's own designer Ludwig Kny. The ceramics and glassware made for the experiment under the direction of T.A.Fennemore of Brain & Co. were shown first at Harrods in 1934 and then more fully at the exhibition 'British Art in Industry', Royal Academy, London, 1935. The drawing for this glass is annotated in Nash's handwriting 'Could you make a yellow glass on this principle. This is the revised version of the white glass you sent me' |
