A deacon (in a dalmatic) kneeling, with his arms crossed on his chest; in the lower right corner two pen sketches of a kneeling woman
Inscribed on the back in pencil in a modern hand ‘Ciro Ferri…From Sir T. Lawrence’s collection etc.’
Black and red chalk heightened with white on brown paper
14 ½ X 10 3/8 (368 X 264) D. 782-1887
PROVENANCE Sir T.Lawrence (Lugt 2445); bought 1887
The former attribution to Ciro Ferri is not convincing. The drawing is more in the manner of a Florentine of Tuscan artist (such as Baldassarre Franceschini) working in the middle of the 17th century, outside the Cortona circle. |
