This Faldstool was made for St. Columba's Haggerston in Hackney which was built to Brooks designs in 1867-1871. It is however identical to one designed by Brooks in 1865 for his other Hackney church St. Michael & All Angels Shoreditch. These two churches and their furnishings represent the apogee of the Reformed Gothic style.(pre July 2001) |
Object history | This faldstool is part of a collection of furniture which was offered to the Museum before the closure of St. Columba's as an Anglican church in 1983. It is almost identical in design to the faldstool designed by James Brooks for St. Michael and All Angels, Shoreditch, illustrated in The Building News, November 23rd 1866, page 781. |
Historical context | The church of St. Columba, Haggerston, was designed by the architect, James Brooks, built 1868-9, and consecrated in July 1869. St. Columba's Church was declared redundant in 1975 when the parish merged with that of St. Anne, Hoxton. St. Columba's closed as an Anglican church in 1983. |
