During the 1990s, several major British ceramic factories began to realise that the traditional formal dining-service was no longer well-suited to many modern lifestyles. Buffets, barbecues, eating in front of the television, casual eating at casual tables or without tables - these trends were increasingly the norm. Simon Stevens, a senior designer at Wedgwood, has addressed this tendency with "Weekday/Weekend". He first considered his own eating patterns and what foodstuffs were popular at supermarkets. His multi-functional range of vessels reflects modern cooking practice and international cuisine. One can imagine stir-fries, pasta, olives, rice, salads tossed in oil and vinegar, cappuccinos and espressos. These shapes are stylish, simple and modern but their traditional patterns (herringbone, flute and chequer) are timeless classics. |
