REPRODUCED: Pall Mall Budget 23 February 1893 (p.281); Uncollected Work 1925 (no.53); Reade 1967 (plate 46). One of five characters in the play Diplomacy, which B. C. Stephenson and Clement Scott adapted from Victorien Sardou’s Dora, first produced in Paris in January 1877. After a provincial tour, the play was produced by Mr and Mrs Bancroft, leading actor-managers, at the Garrick Theatre, London, where it opened on 18 February 1893. The Artist called the revival a ‘triumph’ (1 March 1893, p.82). Another reviewer, however, found himself longing for the 1884 ‘charged’ performance of the play and surprised that ‘the one cry that rose at the end of each act was for [Forbes Robertson and Miss Rorke]’ (Theatre 1 March 1893, p.166). Beardsley’s drawings accompanied an article titled ‘The Reappearance of Mrs Bancroft’, an interview with Mr Bancroft about the play (Pall Mall Budget 23 February 1893, pp.281-2). For further comment about Beardsley’s drawings for the Pall Mall Budget, see 274 above.
