Object history | The subject is Ellen Craft (1826-1891), a mixed-race slave who escaped disguised as a white male planter, accompanied by her husband William (1824-1900) as her personal servant. This engraving was the frontispiece to the book they published about their experiences, Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom (London, 1860). |
