Object history | The subject of this engraving is the famous eccentric, Matthew Robinson-Morris, 2nd Baron Rokesby (1713-1800) who was renowned for his preference of watery environments to dry ones, to the extent of having a swimming pool built at his home, as well as for allowing his beard to grow uncut, in stark contrast to the contemporary fashion for being clean-shaven. |
