Object history | The subject of this engraving is John Elwes (or Meggot), a notorious 18th century miser who may have inspired the character of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Elwes is also referred to in Dickens's last complete novel, Our Mutual Friend |
