Physical description

'Gaité Montparnasse'. Engraved and etched(?) copperplate, cancelled, showing an audience at the music hall, viewed from the stage. Inscribed with title below image (in reverse). Signed St. (in reverse). Lettered with title (not in reverse) and Sickert inv del et sc. (in reverse) below image. Plate in cancelled by four 1cm (approx) holes, one in each corner of the image.

Object history note

This is one of a group of etchings, E.84 to 94-1950 (including three cancelled copperplates) printed by David Strang following the artist's death in 1942, at the request of his widow Thérèse Lessore (1884-1945). The editions varied in number depending on the condition of the plate, and afterwards, the copperplates were cancelled.

Historical context note

Sickert produced a number of paintings at the Gaïté Montparnasse on the bank of the Seine c.1907. He made three paintings of the theatre, showing partial views of the gallery from below.
