'WALKER, John (worked c.1792-c.1803)

The Copperplate Magazine, or Monthly Cabinet of Picturesque Prints was published between 1792 and 1802. The first publishers were Harrison & Co., 18 Paternoster Row, London, until November 1794. It was taken over by John Walker in December 1794 and continued to be issued in monthly parts, each part consisting of two plates, In its final form, it comprised 250 plates, each with descriptive letterpress on a following sheet, bound as 5 volumes, each with an undated title-page. A set is in the Victoria and Albert Museum Library.
The plates were available separately and a collection of them was also issued by Walker as The Itinerant: a Select Collection of Interesting and Picturesque Views in Great Britain and Ireland. An edition in the Victoria and Albert Museum Library has a title page dated 1799 and consist [sic] of 180 plates with letterpress printed below. The paper used in this volume is watermarked 1794, 1795 and 1801 and one plate (a view of Oxford, different from the view used in The Copperplate Magazine) is dated February 1803. These plates, with a few exceptions, have had their original plate numbers removed where necessary, and the name of The Itinerant and of the appropriate county added.
