Physical description

Album with 96 sheets of white wove paper, quarter bound in green leather with cloth boards, containing 35 drawings of landscapes, seascapes and portraits after various artists. Watercolour, bodycolour, Indian ink and pastel. Inscribed on the first page with a biographical note on the artist. Some pages are inscribed with attributions to artists and subjects.

Object history note

The artist, Henry Compton was a page-in-waiting to George III. He married Miss Mary Dacres, lady in charge of the Royal children, in 1777. A chalk portrait of him by John Hoppner is also in the Museum collection (E.536-1950) and miniatures of him (P.11-1950, attributed to P.Collins) and his wife (P.9-1950, by A.B. Lens) are in the Paintings collection.
