Half length male figure, head turned to front, the left arm leaning on a chairback, the index finger of the hand held in the right hand wearing coat, waistcoat and shirt and stock of the mid 1820s. On the table are partly seen paper, a quill pen and inkstand; a curtain is draped across the background, open at extreme left to reveal part of a pillar and open sky beyond. Aquatint by William Say after James Lonsdale. Titled beneath the image: "Mr Yates of the Adelphi Theatre. Engraved by Willm. Say Engraver to H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester. 1826. Painted by Jas. Lonsdale Esqr."
