This box was especially made to contain the nut picks, nutcrackers and grape scissors. This boxed set would have been used when eating fruit and nuts during dessert. In 1892 the silver and electroplate manufacturer James Dixon & Sons offered similar boxed sets at a cost of up to 60s.

Louis Beaver assembled this set for sale and probably commissioned the box, which bears his name and address. He is listed in a street directory of 1910 as a watch- and clockmaker and jeweller. He moved to St Ann's Street in Manchester sometime after 1872, in which year an earlier street directory lists the firm in Cross Street, Manchester.
