Physical description

Costume design for Leigh Maurice as Joseph Brotherhood, Allen Chapman as James Giddy, and Neville Griffiths as Rufus Piggott. The design depicts three full length male figures wearing late 18th century style costume. The figure on the left wears a cleric's costume of black breeches, black jacket, white clerical tabs; and black hat, stockings and shoes. The central figure wears a labourer's costume of white smock, green breeches, grey boots, and a straw hat. The figure on the right wears a soldier's uniform of a red,white,and blue jacket with grey breeches; black boots; and a tall hat. To the right of this figure is a detailed depiction of boot with stocking. The design has been painted and drawn over a grey wash.

Object history note

This costume design by Alix Stone is part of an extensive collection of designs purchased by the Theatre Museum directly from the artist in 1994. The design was executed for a production of Richard Rodney Bennett's opera "Penny for a Song", performed by the Sadler's Wells Opera at Sadler's Wells, October 31st 1967. The libretto by Colin Graham is based on John Whiting's play of the same name. The production was directed by Colin Campbell; conducted by Bryan Balkwill; and lit by Charles Bristow. The production was revived at Sadler's Wells in January 1968.
