Glove Puppet


Owl glove puppet with papier maché head and beak, the central 'face' painted grey. The beak is painted a pale gold and the eyes are made from brass buttons with cut steel sequins for the pupils, painted dark brown. The body is made from wool fabric, losely woven with brown, beige and cream wool in a checked pattern. The wings are edged in plaited cream and brown wool, which also covers the wire-frame claws. A plastic-covered loop is sewn into the hem to suspend the puppet.

Object history
This puppet was acquired with a bequest of Punch & Judy memorabilia from Tom Howard, the archivist of The British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild, along with a Mr Punch glove puppet and two Chinese puppets, but there is no note of how he acquired the owl glove puppet or by whom it was made and used.
