Carved hollowed wood, gilded red thitsi lacquer and decorated with mirror glass and imitation jewels in the hman-zi shwei-cha technique.
Brief description
Burmese bowed stringed instrument (bow and strings are now missing). Hollowed wood red lacquered and gilded. Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885). Decorated with mirror glass and imitation jewels and a carved figure of a kein-naya. ca. before 1869

Purchase (Engel Collection). This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
Production
Attribution note: This object is called a thro or tarau in 1882 Art Inventory, South Kensington Museum. However, terms in registers for Burmese violin type bowed instruments vary. Thro, tarau, tharau, ta-yoa, nhyng are all used.
