c.1850s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A scene in a circus ring, a male acrobat with flags standing one-footed on the saddle of a white horse. He wears white tights, striped knickerbockers and a blue short-sleeved jacket with a green sash. A man in a blue coat with yellow lapels, high boots and a whip stands just behind the horse, and to the right, another performer, in red tunic and blue pants, both with jagged edges, balances a paper cone on his nose. The latter performer is presented as a stereotypical Chinese man, with the long braid, moustache and small hat that Western culture popularly associated with men from China at this time.
