Thomas Bewick engraved plates for bank notes for the Carlisle, Bewick and Northumberland Banks to prevent pen and ink forgeries. Bewick had a great interest in bank notes and in his memoirs he writes extensively on the subject of bank notes and forgeries. See 'A Memoir of Thomas Bewick Written by Himself' in 1862 (pp.166-171) where variant examples are illustrated. The plate for this note was around for a long time. A modern impression was taken from the plate lent by Mr W H Hedworth for the Thomas Bewick Exhibition, Bethnal Green Museum in 1953.
