The costume consists of a dark yellow patterned kimono worn with an orange obi. The child also wears a pair of sandals on his feet, and carries a small Amercian flag in his left hand.

Object history
This costume design by Alix Stone is part of an extensive collection of designs purchased by the Theatre Museum directly from the artist in 1994. The design was executed for a revision of a 1964 production of Puccini's opera "Madam Butterfly" by the Sadler's Wells Opera at the London Coliseum, November 4th 1971. The original production was directed by Colin Graham; and lit by Charles Bristow. The production was later revived at the London Coliseum in September 1972.
