This casket is decorated with the refined marquetry that was the hallmark of Parisian cabinet-makers of the 1780s. The banded frames to the panels, which show the bandings 'knotted' at the corners, were particularly fashionable in the period. Although the central motif is of musical instruments, this casket is too small to have housed any instrument or even music. The fact that it is fitted with a secret drawer suggests that it may have been used in conjunction with a desk or writing table.

FRENCH; about 1775

Veneered with marquetry of various woods. The interior has three compartments with fitted tambour shutters. There is a small drawer in the base.

The presence of the vitruvian scroll round the edge of the lid suggests a comparatively early date for this essay in Neo-Classical decoration.
