The upper part of this tripod was originally hung with loose chains. It was bought for £44 from the Paris 1855 Exhibition. In his report on the exhibition, Richard Redgrave noted that "In the Greek style some few designs of great merit and beautiful execution were exhibited by Barbedienne". The tripod is indebted to forms from the first century, A.D.
