Costume design by Alix Stone for Elizabeth Harwood as Lucia in Act II Scene 2 of "Lucia di Lammermoor", originally produced by the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, September 11th 1970, and revived by Scottish Opera in 1974.
This costume design by Alix Stone is part of an extensive collection of designs purchased by the Theatre Museum directly from the artist in 1994. The design was executed for a production of Donizetti's opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" which originally opened at the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, on September 11th 1970. The scenery for the production was designed by Henry Bardon. The production was subsequently revived by Scottish Opera at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle on September 29th 1974. The revival was directed by John Copley, conducted by Roderick Brydon, and Elizabeth Harwood appeared as in the title role. The lighting was by Charles Bristow. The production was revived again by Scottish Opera in 1975 and 1981.

Physical description | Costume design for Elizabeth Harwood as Lucia in Act II Scene 2 of Lucia di Lammermoor. The design depicts a full length female figure wearing a wedding dress in the style of the 1630's. The costume consists of a patterned white over dress, short bodice with deep side tabs and pointed stomacher, and full pane sleeves in two tiers held by rosettes; worn over a plain white underskirt and lace edged smock. The figure also wears a long white wedding veil on her head. The neckline of the bodice, and the cuffs are edged with white lace. She holds a white lace handkerchief in her right hand, and wears a pearl necklace around her neck, and pearl bracelet around her left wrist. |
