Object history | The name Wowski probably refers to a character in George Colman's comic opera Inkle and Yarico, first performed at the Haymarket Theatre in 1787. Wowski (sometimes Wouski) is a black handmaiden who has a relationship with a white servant. Several satirical prints, including Gillray's suppressed 1788 image (E.685:5-2014) use this contemporary play to address rumours of Prince William Henry (later William IV)'s relationship with a black woman in Barbados. |
