It has a red and gold boat-shaped resonator encircled from bow to stern with a distinctive dark green wavy band. The upper surface is covered with deerskin, and a tall arch rising from the prow, curves inwards. The thirteen strings run diagonally from the resonator to the arch to which they are fastened by red tasselled tuning cords.

Saung gauk, Burmese boat shaped harp of thirteen strings and red silk tuning cords. Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885). Hollow wood red and green lacquered and partly gilded. ca. 1862.

Historical significance: Traditionally used in chamber music ensembles with the thro (violin); mi-gyaung (crocodile zither) & patala (xylophone) or to accompany vocal presentations.
