The National Photographic Record Association was founded in 1897 by Sir Benjamin Stone, a prolific photographer and Conservative MP. Stone appealed to amateur photographers and camera clubs to document, county by county, Britain’s ancient buildings, customs and other ‘survivals’ of historical interest, as records for the future. The Association gave prints as they were made to the British Museum. The collection of over 5000 photographs remained there until 2000, when it was transferred to the V&A.

The National Photographic Record Association was founded in 1897 by Sir Benjamin Stone, a prolific photographer and Conservative MP.
