Place of origin |
Glass mirror with frame consisting of glass elements, partly blown, partly cast, mounted on wood. The mirrow is wheel-engraved with a dancing, female figure with a tambourine.
The outline follows contrasting baroque curves, the general effect being the shape of an open tulip. Round the edges are attached scroll-shaped sections of glass to act as a frame, and at the top, affixed to the wooden underframe, is a moulded glass mask flanked by two flowers in opaque white and coloured glass. Holes for further flowers, now lost, are seen in the wood at the top; three flowers survive on each side, and three more at the bottom, where the wooden bracket from which they spring is masked by a palmate shield formed from rods of glass stuck together and tooled. In the middle of the mirror there is engraved from the back a maenad, wearing a tiara and a loose wrap, who waves a tambourine and dances on clouds to the right.
