Object history | This print is a plate from Houghton Gallery, published by John and Josiah Boydell, London, 1788. Freeman O'Donoghue, Freeman in <u>British Museum: Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits.</u>, 1908-25, has pointed out that John Chaloner Smith's identification of the sitter as Sir Thomas Chaloner, the Younger (1559-1615) is erroneous and that the painting may represent one of his sons, possibly Thomas Chaloner the Regicide (1595-1661). Van Dyck visited England in 1621 and 1627 but did not commence his English practice until 1632. |
Production | The accession entry states that this print was published as a plate in Houghton Gallery in 1788, but is originally dated on the print May 2 1778. |
