Physical description

Portrait, almost whole-length, of William Bates seated at a table. The sitter is shown facing slightly left, wearing a bobbed wig and an overcoat, buttoned up. His right hand, in which he holds a quill, is resting on the table; his left hand is resting on his left knee.
