Object history | The accession record identifies the sitter as Suleiman III (1496-1566). The identification is incorrect as are the dates given, which are those of Suleiman I ('the Magnificent'). The print is in fact a depiction of Suleiman II (1642-1691), Sultan of the Ottoman Empire at the time this print was made in 1688. The inscription identifies the sitter as 'Soliman ye IIId. the Present Emperorur of the Turks'. This mistake probably arose because of a confusion between the names Suleiman and Selim. It is likely that the engraver mistakenly assumed that Selim II, successor to Suleiman I, was Suleiman II and that Suleiman II was Suleiman III. |
