Adoration of the Magi

Panel
17th century-18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The picture illustrates the story from the New Testament in which the three wise men from the East pay tribute to the baby Jesus.

It was painted on the back of a glass panel, but the painting is viewed from the front, through the glass. This required the craftsman to apply the pigments in reverse order, starting with the highlights, outlines and fine details, and finishing with the broad areas of background colour. The paint is easily damaged as it was not fired onto the surface. It was therefore covered by a layer of varnish and mounted in a frame.
