Pop Artist Peter Blake (born 1932) is famous for his use of appropriated imagery. In this greeting commissioned and issued by Momart during the 1995 Chirstmas season, Blake uses an assortment of Victorian and early-twentieth century ephemera as source material. He reassembles the pictures to create an image that references practially the whole range of visual material used on Christmas cards.

Physical description

Assemblage of images taken from traditional Victorian Christmas cards including a selection of toys, a crepe paper ornamental bells, a decorated pine tree, Father Christmas bearing a satchel of gifts, a dog, and a gathering of children. These are clustered together in the style of photomontage. Unlike the stylised images, the background is a sparse backdrop of red and grey.
