Greetings Card
1994 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Born in Portugal in 1935, Rego's work centres on notions of storytelling. One of her earliest influences came from her father's copy of Dante's Inferno and its accompanying etched illustrations. She has also drawn inspiration from her childhood, and from a mixture of course she has described as "caricature...sights in the street, proverbs, nursery-rhymes, children's games and songs, desires, terror." Perhaps an unusual choice for a Christmas greeting, Rego's work explores both the literal and figurative darkness of human existence.

In this 21cm x 28 cm greetings card, a wide-eyed child-like female figure is reclining. She wears a purple head band, blue shirt and complementary orange short trousers. Her lower legs and feet are bare. Her head rests on a pillow. One hand is supporting her chin while she embraces her lower abdomen with the other. The black background is subtly defined.
