Object history
'Stein der Weisen' translates as 'Philosopher's Stone'. The poster depicts a woman having her nails buffed by a stooped figure. Due to the alchemic properties of a fantastical item such as a Philosopher's Stone, her nails are being transformed into gold. The man can be read as an antisemitic caricature. However, there are detailed accounts of the Kopp and Joseph owners protecting Jewish members of staff during the 1930s and refusing to dismiss Jewish employees after the Nazi blockade enforced from 1933. Indeed members of the Joseph family were deported to Auschwitz and murdered. Further information can be found in Kreutzmüller, Christoph's 'Final Sale in Berlin: The Destruction of Jewish Commercial Activity, 1930-1945' including images of the store front. Kreutzmüller is a curator at the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
