Place of origin

The German-speaking countries of Central Europe had a strong tradition of enamelling on glass. This was at its peak from about 1500-1700, but by the 18th century the quality of workmanship had fallen dramatically. However, there was still a market for spirit flasks brightly painted with popular scenes, and they were produced in considerable quantity.
