This print was pobably made while the artist was recovering from tuberculosis in a sanatorium in Davos in Switzerland between 1946 and 1948. From 1944 to 1945 he had been imprisoned by the Nazis in the Mauthausen forced labour camp in Austria, where as many as 320, 000 people are estimated to have died.
