Physical description

It is shallow in proportion to its width, with incurring sides and no foot. It has a band of triangle motifs between two narrow bands of foliage running round the side, and a gold disc with a Burmese inscription on the bottom giving the date and maker's name.

Descriptive line

Burmese/Shan shallow bowl of bamboo basketry from Kengtung. Coated with black lacquer embellished with triangular and foliate patterns of gilded thayo (moulded lacquer) work. Made by Hsaya Maung Htun 1310 BE (1948 AD).

Production Note

Previously dated 1920-1930. Redated to 1948 by Daw San San Maw; Ministry Archaeology, Rangoon 1994.
